The Secret Behind the Harvest Grove Characters

Have you ever wondered where fairy names like Ally Allicin, Curry Curcumin, Ella Ellagic, or Hessie Hesperidin came from?
If you've read one of the Harvest Grove Children's Books, you may have noticed that the names sound a little unusual. That's because every fairy in Harvest Grove is inspired by something that exists in the real world.
As a clinical nutritionist for more than forty years, I've spent my career helping people understand how food supports health. Along the way, I discovered something fascinating-many fruits, vegetables, herbs, and spices contain remarkable natural compounds called phytonutrients.
One day I found myself asking a simple question:
What if children could grow up loving these foods before they ever learned the science behind them?
That simple question became Harvest Grove.
What Is a Phytonutrient?
The word phytonutrient comes from the Greek word phyto, meaning plant.
Phytonutrients are naturally occurring compounds found in fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, beans, and many other plants. They help plants survive in nature by protecting them from insects, harsh sunlight, disease, and environmental stress.
Scientists have spent decades studying these amazing compounds to better understand the many ways they may support human health.
While children certainly don't need to memorize words like anthocyanin or hesperidin, those wonderful names became the inspiration for the magical characters who now call Harvest Grove home.
Why Fairies?
Children learn through imagination.
They remember characters long after they forget facts.
A lecture about healthy eating may be forgotten by tomorrow, but a kind fairy who saves a magical garden might be remembered for years.
That is exactly what I wanted.
Harvest Grove was never created to teach nutrition lessons inside the story. Instead, each book begins with an exciting adventure where children simply enjoy getting to know the characters.
The learning comes naturally later.
Every Fairy Has a Special Gift
Each Harvest Grove fairy watches over a different plant and possesses a magical gift inspired by a real phytonutrient.
Ally Allicin lovingly cares for the garlic garden.
Alpha and Beta Carotene help pumpkins and carrots grow strong and healthy.
Anya Anthocyanin protects the beautiful purple plum trees.
Curry Curcumin watches over the turmeric roots while helping his puppy friend, Bumper, learn to settle down.
Ella Ellagic protects the berry patch from a thorny tangle.
Hessie Hesperidin fills the citrus groves with bright, beautiful color.
Soon another fairy will join them.
Lulu Lutein watches over the spinach plants and discovers that sometimes even magical paths need a little help finding their light again.
Each adventure is different.
Each fairy has a unique personality.
Yet every story quietly celebrates one of nature's remarkable plants.
Stories First... Science Second
One of the questions I'm asked most often is:
"Are these educational books?"
My answer is always the same.
They're magical fairy stories first.
Children aren't expected to understand phytonutrients, antioxidants, or plant chemistry while they're reading.
Instead, they laugh.
They imagine.
They wonder.
Only after the story ends do parents discover a short note explaining the real food and the natural compound that inspired the adventure.
That note is written especially for grown-ups.
It transforms a fun fairy story into an opportunity for families to explore nature together-without interrupting the magic for young readers.
A Different Way to Encourage Curiosity
As both a clinical nutritionist and a children's author, I've learned something important.
Children are much more likely to become curious than they are to respond to lectures.
When a child loves Ally, they may become curious about garlic.
When they meet Curry, they may notice turmeric for the first time.
When Lulu arrives, perhaps spinach won't seem quite so ordinary anymore.
That curiosity belongs to the child.
No pressure.
No guilt.
Just discovery.
Sometimes the best learning begins with a simple question:
"Is that fairy real?"
Growing Together
My hope is that Harvest Grove becomes more than a collection of books.
I hope it becomes a place where imagination and nature meet.
A place where families read together.
Where children color fairy pages, invent magical gardens, and create fairy names of their own.
And perhaps, years later, those same children will smile when they recognize words like allicin, curcumin, or lutein-remembering that they first met them through a tiny fairy in a magical garden.
After all...
Every great adventure begins with a little curiosity.
And sometimes...
A little fairy helps light the way.
