How a Clinical Nutritionist Ended Up Writing Fairy Stories

If someone had told me years ago that I would one day be writing fairy stories for children, I probably would have laughed.
For most of my career, I worked as a clinical nutritionist, helping people understand how food affects health. I spent decades studying nutrition, herbs, natural compounds, and the remarkable ways plants support the human body.
Along the way, I noticed something interesting.
Adults often understand why healthy foods are important, but children usually don't care about scientific explanations. Telling a child that a fruit contains a beneficial plant compound rarely makes that fruit seem more exciting.
Stories, however, are different.
Children naturally connect with characters, adventures, and imagination. A story can make an idea memorable in a way that facts alone often cannot.
That realization eventually became the inspiration for Harvest Grove.
Instead of teaching children about nutrition directly, I began imagining characters inspired by the colorful fruits, vegetables, and plants I had spent years studying. Each character would have a unique personality, magical adventures, and challenges to overcome. Behind the scenes, each one would also be inspired by a real food and one of the natural compounds that make that food special.
The result was a collection of stories that are magical adventures first and nutrition-inspired second.
Children can simply enjoy the stories. They don't need to know anything about phytonutrients, antioxidants, or plant chemistry to have fun in Harvest Grove.
For parents, grandparents, teachers, and caregivers, however, there is another layer waiting to be discovered.
Characters such as Ally Allicin, the twins Alpha and Beta Carotene, Anya Anthocyanin, Curry Curcumin, and Ella Ellagic are all inspired by real foods and the naturally occurring compounds found within them. The stories themselves are not lessons, but they create opportunities for conversations about fruits, vegetables, herbs, and healthy foods in a natural and enjoyable way.
Harvest Grove grew from the belief that imagination and learning do not have to be separate things. Stories can entertain, inspire curiosity, and spark conversations long after the last page is turned.
After decades of helping adults understand nutrition, writing fairy stories became an unexpected way to share some of that same appreciation for the colorful world of plants with a new generation.
And honestly, it has been one of the most enjoyable adventures of all.
