What You Need to Know to Stay Safe

What Is an Adrenal Crisis?

An adrenal crisis is a medical emergency that occurs when your body doesn’t have enough cortisol to respond to stress. This can happen if you have adrenal insufficiency (such as Addison’s disease or secondary adrenal suppression) and don’t get enough cortisol during illness, injury, or surgery.

🚨 Warning Signs of an Adrenal Crisis:
  • Sudden severe fatigue or weakness

  • Low blood pressure (dizziness or fainting)

  • Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain

  • Confusion or disorientation

  • Rapid heartbeat

  • Loss of consciousness

🛡️ How to Prevent a Crisis:

1. Take your medication consistently. Don’t skip your hydrocortisone, prednisone, or fludrocortisone doses.

2. Follow "sick day rules." Double or triple your usual dose if you have:

  • Fever, flu, or infection

  • Vomiting or diarrhea

  • Major stress (e.g., dental work, surgery)

3. Keep an emergency kit with you.

  • Injectable hydrocortisone (Solu-Cortef)

  • Syringe or autoinjector

  • Clear instructions for use

4. Wear a medical ID bracelet. This lets emergency responders know you have adrenal insufficiency.

5. Educate loved ones. Make sure family, friends, and coworkers know what to do in an emergency.

🌱 When to Seek Immediate Medical Help:

If symptoms of adrenal crisis appear or you can’t keep your meds down (vomiting), call 911 or go to the ER immediately. Use your injectable hydrocortisone en route if needed.

✨ Stay Empowered, Not Afraid

With the right tools and knowledge, adrenal insufficiency can be well-managed. Always plan ahead, especially during travel or illness.
